Hello,
here are two links concerning deterministic communication in control systems.

IEEE 1588, Standard for a Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems, http://ieee1588.nist.gov/
EtherCAT, Ethernet for Control Automation Technology, http://www.ethercat.org/

I am sure there are more realtime enabled communication protocols on the market. Feel free to add more and to discuss pros and cons.
