After a mail exchange with Florian I was able to install jul14p3 on Yosemite.
The solution was to move to a more recent root version changing the ROOTVERSION hash in script/package_version.sh :

export ROOTVERSION=3e7673472eedd975f9b5fcc1ced44ddbd8db476d

I had an additional problem in the installation of VGM due to an old subversion version in my mac (1.6). Removing it and installing a 1.8 version everything did run smooth.
