Dear colleagues,

I only receive emails from the Forum for threads that I participate in or that are newly started. I realize that because of this I miss a lot of contributions.

Does anybody where I would need to change the settings, such that I get notifications for all contributions?

Cheers! Sebastian.

Hi,

you've to log in and go to your control panel. Under the folder
"subscriptions" you can activate/deactivate subfora and topics.

Cheers
Olaf.

If someone finds that, I will buy a bottle of champagne.

what I always do:

go to "Message Navigator"

newer then "3"
(i.e. messages of the last three days)

older than "0"

select

-- PandaRoot

or

-- Panda Computing
(for the grid and data challenge messages)

this is ordered in forums and sub-ordered in topics
(so maybe even more ordered than it would be in my email folder
if we got all the postings per email ...)

Hi Olaf!

I have had a look there but I think it is not what I need.

In the control panel I can only (un)subscribe subtopics. This is not what I want. I am subscribed to all the major forums (GENERAL, BUGS..., TRACKING etc) and I want to get all messages that are submitted there.

Cheers! Sebastian.

Hi Sebastian,

well, in my case I've two lists, one titled "subscribed forums" and one "subscribed topics". Obviously I get the notifications by e-mail of all forums I subscribed to ...

Olaf.

PS: did you check "Select Notification by Default:" in your account settings?

Yes, I also get emails from all forums. The point is that I do not get notifications for every contribution. Just for openings of new topics or direct answers to my own contributions.

yes I checked the default notification setting. It is "yes".
I have the impression, that this is a general feature of the forum. Maybe the Forum Admin can change it?

Sebastian.

ah I see ... well, I think it's intended like that: once a new topic in a subscribed forum appears, you should decide whether you want to follow it or not, i.e. subscribe this topic or not. So the question is how to automatically subscribe to any new topic which appears in a subscribed forum. I'll forward this problem to the admin.

Olaf.

To sum this discussion up:

This forum has 3 kinds of subscriptions:
  1. Implicit post subscriptions: you'll be notified about answers to your own posts unless you uncheck Post Notification.
  2. You can subscribe top topics and will be informed about new posts.
  3. You can subscribe to forums and will be notified about newly started topics (but not about new posts to already existing topics).

But there's no category subscription feature.

Two switches may be tweaked system-wide:
  • *Smart notification*: you'll receive only one notification (about replies to your posts) until you read these replies; then you'll be also informed about further replies. This is turned off at the moment.
  • *All Message Forum Notification*: forum subscribers will receive notifications about every new message in the forum, rather then just new topics in the forum. This is also turned off at the moment.

Seems like All Message Forum Notification is what you want. I could just turn it on and see if someone complains. Twisted Evil
Or may I should anounce it first? We'll see.
Regards,
Christopher

Hi Christopher!

Will I get all messages from the whole GSI Forum?
Or just PANDAROOT?

If the latter is the case, just switch it on and blame me if someone complains Wink

Cheers! Sebastian.

Hi Sebastian,
if you go into all the pandaroot categories, such as MVD General EMC Tracking and so on, there is the button "Subscribe to the forum". If you turn it on, you will receive a message each time a new topic will be added to the category.

When you go to a new topic, you need to click on "Subscribe to the topic" to receive all the further messages.

In each case, ween you do "login" you will se with a red icon all the topics that you have not read, so you can just explore them and in case subscribe to all those discussions interesting to you.

Hope it helps.

Hi Christopher, I would support it too to switch the "all message notification" ON - if it is only for PandaRoot.
My argument is, that usually it is more work, if you miss an important message, than just to have to delete it in your email client. But I think it would be wise to send a short announcement (in other words, to start a new topic, so that people are alarmed, because probably not everybody followed this discussion, due to the obvious reasons ...). And then see if someone complains. We will have a PandaRoot meeting next week Wednesday, so then everyone will have a chance to state an opinion directly. And in the meantime we could - as he offered graciously - maybe blame Sebastian. cheers, -- Soeren

You will be notified about all new messages in all fora you subscribed to i.e. just PANDAROOT if you only subscribed to that one.

No, this is a side-wide setting. All users will receive notifications about all new messages in forums they subscribed to.

But I guess that's ok. If you're not interessted in all posts, you should not subscribe to the forum but to single topics only.

Christopher

Dear Christopher,

I would prefer to go back to the old system because the size of my mail account here at Jülich is very limited and I am almost dying by incoming mails from the forum. While I am at work that is fine but during holidays this could become a problem.

Ciao,

Tobias

OK. I did not turn it back off yet. Maybe I should create a poll?

Anyhow I posted a feature request at the developer forum: http://fudforum.org/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=10146&start=0&

Kind regards,
Christopher

Hi all,

actually I liked it very much
(never miss an important message again ... a dream)

Christopher, if you like, you can create a poll
(if Sebastian and me are pro, and Tobias is contra, then this would be a democratic decision in favour, or?)

We will also vote on the next PandaRoot meeting, I think.
(for the people who didn't follow the discussion yet).

I also thought that we could solve Tobias "mailbox overflow during holiday" problem maybe by a [email from forum->SPAM folder] for the duration of the holiday.

P.S. if it stays switched OFF, do I have to buy the champagne anyway?

cheers, Soeren

I think it was nice. For people who need to tame their email stream, what about sieve (http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/sieve/index.html)?

I would be in favour of a poll.

Sebastian.

Yes, SIEVE is quite nice. Anyhow it only works with real mail servers but GSI uses M$ Exchange instead Sad

Anyhow I'll try to create poll - never used that before.
