Dear collaborators!

I would like to propose to organize a "Panda Software Seminar".

I am still under the impressions of the recent workshop in Ferrara. The discussions we had were certainly hard work. On the other hand after all I enjoyed it very much to exchange ideas with you!
The challenges that ly ahead of us have convinced me once again that good training is essential for our success.

The idea that came to my mind of having a seminar on general software issues looks like this:

1) Possible topics: C++, ROOT, software design, tools (debugger, tester & co)

2) The seminar is held on a weekly basis via vrvs. One talk per sessions. One hour per talk.

3) The program is fixed for one semester in advance.

4) Contributions from everybody - not just so called experts! One learns more by preparing a talk than if you enjoy an expert's lecture.

What do you think about this idea?

Dear Sebastian and others,

I see Sebastian's point and would certainly support it. The main challenge of such a meeting is to keep movitating people to join such a tutorial on a very regular basis. As Sebastian mentions, it should not only be for the experts, but also have the non-experts to participate actively and regularly (!) in such a meeting. The danger is, however, that at the end of the semester only the speaker and less-than-a-handfull of mainly expert participants will be present in the vrvs lecture. But maybe if we indeed fix the dates, topics, and speakers before hand it would help. I would be curious about the opinions of others on this matter as well.

What we could do is to give it a try. Sebastian, are you willing (and have time) to organize such an event? If not, let me know....

Hi!

I could manage the topics/speakers list and book the VRVS. No problem.

What about the others? Could you imagine to pick that one software topic you always wanted to know more about and make a contribution out of it?

Just a detail: I do not know if I understand you correctly. Are you saying we should have
general topics like "c++ design" in the seminar and use the "computing
workshop" for tutorials like: "How to use the framework"?

I will prepare a section on the wiki where we can brainstorm topics for
the seminar.

If people do not want to take part in the Seminar they need not. It is not
supposed to be a forum for software related decisions. It is only meant
for education.

Yes. I agree!

Yes.
Tutorials should be interactive. So it's important that people take actively part on those. Part of the Computing Software Workshops in Panda should be dedicated (for sure! until now it happened, as I saw) to do [also] tutorials in the sense that to give common bases for programming can help to avoid misunderstandings. vrvs seminars in my opinion can give this common base. After a good tutorial, users should be able to apply what they learnt.

Are you the first volunteer for one of these vrvs seminars? Smile
