I sometimes use lxsarge32 via a 'ssh -X' session, because some software is first test installed there.

Recently, I started (by mistake) acroread on lxsarge32. This locked the XServer on my local system (lxg1408) for about two minutes. No mouse events were processed. After that time acroread showed up, and all pending mouse events were processed.

This is behaviour reproducible, but seems to be specific to lxsarge32.

I tried starting acroread via 'ssh -X' from lxg1413, another Sarge system, no problems, acroread7 start quickly.

Starting acroread via ssh from a Woody box, like lxi001, take some time till acroread5 in this case shows up, but the XServer doesn't lock up in this case.

Any hint on what's causing this and how to avoid this are welcome.

I suspect that this issue is related to a general problem when mounting NFS shares from Woody servers on Sarge machines (i. e. lxfs01:/usr/local, where acroread is installed).
This problem is even amplified when using NFS over TCP.

Therefore all Sarge machines already moved to the designated lxfs01 replacement cluster lxha01. Since there are yet deficiencies in the syncronisation procedure for /usr/local (see http://wiki.gsi.de/cgi-bin/view/Linux/SargeUpgrade#UsrLocal), lxsarge32 as the only Sarge machine still mounts /usr/local from lxfs01.

BTW: ssh -X is the implicit default for GSI-internal SSH connections

Christopher
