Dear PandaRooters,

I recently was looking into a toolkit for Multi-variate Data Analysis with ROOT (TMVA). Check out the following presentation, for a quick overview:

http://esmane.physics.lsa.umich.edu/wl/cern/computing/2007/root/20070328 -umwlcd0010-06/real/f001.htm

The TMVA open source website is located on...

http://tmva.sourceforge.net/

...where you can find some examples, documentation, Wiki, etc.

I wonder whether it would be a good idea to connect these developments to the PandaRoot activities, in particular in view of PID. Opinions are welcome,

Johan.

In Victoria there was a talk about TMVA, and in HADES somebody is starting to use it for PID.

I have already started to take a look into the TMVA manual, we could use it but before we need a PID candidate, and before before (before^2) we need to have a well stated track as starting point.

Another alternative package, which we could exploit for PandaRoot:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/statpatrec

with docs, presentations, etc at

http://www.cithep.caltech.edu/~narsky/spr.html

Certainly not as user-friendly as TMVA....

Johan.

You don't have to get TVMA from sourceforge.
TMVA is now completely integrated in ROOT and should be already
available with the new external packages.

As Stefano mentioned already one of the Hades Phd students used TVMA for his analysis and had verry good experience with the package. For example you get a lot of nice QA histograms for free.
