Question about supported Linux distributions [message #16384]

Hello all,

I am wondering about which Linux distributions are officially supported by PandaRoot or put differently: For which X can the following question be answered with "yes":

If I install distribution X and run into a problem with PandaRoot or the external packages which is specific to distribution X can I expect that such problems will be solved by the computing community.

In my concrete case I think about moving to Linux Mint Debian 201403 which is based on the current testing branch "jessie" of Debian. Here I found the info that Debian seems to be supported quite well, however, all mentioned versions are older stable branches. The official Debian website even declares them obsolete at this point.

I have tried to find some official statement which distributions are supported and have found some general info in the Build Prerequisites and in the PandaRoot FAQ. The latter also mentions a page stating exactly which platforms are supported, but the link does not work and I was also not able to find such a page when I searched for it.

In the FairRoot webpage there are pages with each external packages versions, i.e. for apr13 this. There you find all the tested versions.
If you move a too recent OS, in particular one born after the creation of externals, then most probably the code will need some fix, we can take care about the panda root fixes but in general most of the problems come from the external packages installation. Since apr13 is 1 year old most probably you will find problems which will not be fixed (at present they do not work with Maverick). I can suggest to try in a virtual machine, or to use a more conservative OS.

Thank you very much! Unfortunately, I did not have the idea to check the "release notes" for the external packages. The policy that you explain makes sense and I will probably go with a more conservative choice of operating system.

Hi Martin,

we try to support as many different Linux distributions as possible, but sometimes we can't support older versions of FairSoft for newer version of Linux distributione. Mostly this is due to changes in the compiler infrastructure of the Linux distributions. As Stefano already mentioned it isn't possible to support the release apr13 for Mac OSX Mavericks. To compile ROOT on Mavericks you need a very new version of ROOT which is not part of the old release.

If you need an older version of the external packages it is saver to use also an older version of Linux or you have to patch the old version of the externals to get it working with the new Linux version.

Thank you very much Florian. That is completely fine with me.

As an information in case somebody else wants to update: PandaRoot trunk seems to be running fine with Kubuntu 14.04 64 bit, I assume with other Ubuntu 14.04 based distributions as well. However, it is necessary to apply a workaround for external packages apr13 as described here:

The only problem I have found so far is that eclipse 3.8 crashes sometimes when you try to change some settings. However, I can live with that as I had lots of random eclipse 3.7 crashes with Kubuntu 12.04 64 bit previously.

there is a new patch release "apr13p1" of the external packages available which fixes the issue.
