You are using an "alien" in /usr/bin, which is not the grid "alien" client. Once launching alien you have to write the full path, to be sure... or remove /usr/bin from your PATH.
I am using a personal installed version of alien. At GSI there is already an installed alien client, but I do not remember how it is called.
