The solution is:

gROOT->LoadMacro("$VMCWORKDIR/gconfig/rootlogon.C");
rootlogon();

TFile* file = new TFile("testparams.root");
file->Get("FairBaseParSet"); 

// now the geometry is available as TGeo in memory

gGeoManager->GetMasterVolume()->Draw("ogl");

where testparams is not your simulation file but the parameter one.
